Adopting organic practices, the grapes for this Shiraz come from Dandelion’s Kinkora vineyard, in Seppeltsfield Road, Tanunda, approximately 75 kilometres north east of Adelaide. The vines here range in age from 35 to 108 years old, many planted on their original rootstock. Throughout their vineyards they encourage the humble dandelion among the vines as they suppress winter weeds and provide mulch in summer. At the winery, whole bunches were hand harvested, gently crushed and naturally fermented in open fermenters for eight days. The cap was hand plunged twice a day before the fruit was carefully pressed off the skins using a basket press into a mix of new and previously filled French oak barriques to finish fermentation. The Barossa hills village of Keyneton, pioneered by pastoralist Joseph Keynes in 1842, was a musical and cultural focus for the early settlers, and was home to the Henschke Family Brass Band, founded in 1888. During the 1950s and early 1960s Cabernet Sauvignon was mostly used for blending, but Schubert’s breakthrough with the varietal as a stand-alone wine came in 1964 with the inaugural vintage. Early Bin 707s were typically open fermented under wax-lined header boards and matured in seasoned old oak (rather than new oak). The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 (when fruit was directed to other wines) nor in 1981, 1995, 2000, 2003, 2011 or 2017 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). Full-bodied and with proven cellaring potential, Bin 707 retains a secure place among the ranks of Australia’s finest Cabernets. The Shiraz brings backbone, flesh and body to the wine with the Grenache adding a soft, vibrant juiciness. Wallace is an ancestral name of Colin Glaetzer's wife, Judith, whose family hail from the old market town of Cupar in Fife, Scotland. Judith's Celtic ancestry is reflected in the three elements of the Wallace symbol - the Celtic cross, thistle and the Celtic knot pattern. This vintage is a blend of Shiraz (78%) and Grenache (22%) grapes sourced old vines grown in the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Old vine Barossa Grenache has a liveliness and structure that does not benefit from oak maturation and as such oak contact was minimised for the Grenache component to preserve the purity and animation of the fruit. The Shiraz was matured for 16 months in 2-3 year old oak hogshead barrels (80% French \/ 20% American). This wine was known as 'The Grandfather' due to the age of the oldest Tawny in the blend. With each vintage, varietal batches are selected for the Grandfather rare Tawny . These batches are individually aged in seasoned old oak casks before being blended together at 14 years of age. This blend is then introduced into the ‘Grandfather Solera’. This Solera consists of six stages that are designed to fully integrate all components offering consistency and freshness with a final minimum average blended age of 20 years. As Grandfather is matured utilising a Solera system all vintages introduced into the system are retained forever. This system of maturation ensures freshness, consistency of quality and style is sustained over the decades. The Solera currently contains vintages from 1960 to 2004. Including some 44 individual vintages in the Solera is testament to the complexity and age yet also highlights the importance of freshness and fruit. As Grandfather is produced using a Solera system it will always retain every variety used over the years, albeit in small amounts. Of the some 13 varieties identified the major varieties which form the backbone of the blend are Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet Sauvignon. Expect elegant notes of raisin-packed fruitcake, nutty praline, crème brûlée, oxidised Oloroso Sherry, walnut baklava and liquorice all sorts. These varieties and the families who grow them earned the right to represent the Barossa in this blend by surviving for more than 150 years when others could not. At the winery the fruit is forked into the 1880's wooden Bagshaw de-stemmer before fermenting in open slate tanks. Early Australian winemakers were able to write their own rulebook, free from the confines of the European appellation system. Following Rockford's signature approach, the grapes undergo destemming with the 1880’s Bagshaw machine, open fermentation, and gentle basket pressing. A wine with astounding power and complexity countered by exemplary elegance. To craft this wine Ben sourced extraordinary Shiraz fruit from four outstanding vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. The fruit was hand harvested from low yielding vines aged up to 110 years old. At the winery each parcel was fermented separately in small open fermenters and gently hand plunged. The wine was then matured for 16 months in 100% new French oak hogsheads with natural malolactic fermentation continuing in oak during maturation. The fine grained French hogsheads were of the highest quality with tannin profiles selected to best express the flavours of the individual parcels. Inky, opaque purple in colour with herbal aromas that accent a core of dark berry fruit. On the palate polished tannins balance the dominant fruit. Blackberries are layered over red, with mocha, liquorice and fresh-cut cedar. In Egyptian mythology, The Eye of Rã was the powerful feminine counterpart to the sun god Ra. I tasted 2018 The Eye of Rã the same week I tasted the 2020 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti releases, Spottswoode’s as yet unreleased 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, and on the same day that I tasted 2020 Ornellaia – all wines with immense scores in my notes and, of course, all world-class creations. But more impressive, certainly to me, was the reaction from two South Australian members of the wine trade fraternity, neither of whom has any affiliation with Mr Glaetzer, who were both struck dumb by this wine.  They happened to be around on the day I opened this bottle, so I brought it along to a couple of meetings for them to taste. One was open-mouthed, performing goldfish impressions, while the other was almost moved to tears as it brought back memories that she described as the ‘essence of the Barossa’!   When a wine has this degree of deliciousness, extraordinary build quality, and perhaps most importantly, a massive emotional hook, it does its job perfectly. Made from the finest parcel of fruit in Ben’s Ebenezer vineyard, this is a wine that does not waver from its mission to graffiti Ben’s name on your palate with indelible Shiraz ink.  The volume of fruit is staggering, but its delivery is incredibly measured and even, and this is the trick.  Rã is not a monster wine but a monstrously long wine.  It is perfectly polished and amazingly spicy, with never-ending layers of fruit and immense class.  It is also drinking well, which is a surprise, but the 2018 vintage is generous with seamless fruit and unique allure.  I feel it will maintain its welcoming and rewarding attitude for two decades, so you are in no hurry to pop a cork!  While this icon wine has an iconic flavour, I must urge you to seek it out.  Imagine all of Ben’s experience and skill in just one bottle – Rã is it.\" \u003c\/em\u003e[#intro] Astounding power \u0026amp; complexity countered by exemplary elegance, the epitome of Barossa Shiraz...[\/intro]\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Glaetzer","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57047035806077,"sku":"A18GLAETZEREYEOFRA","price":270.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0106\/1539\/0266\/files\/EyeofRaBT.jpg?v=1759158916"},{"product_id":"penfolds-grange","title":"Penfolds Grange 1997","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. It has a minimum average blended age of 30 years. The series number denotes the number of times the solera has been drawn off and this is the 22nd bottling since 1994. The fractional blending system ensures the consistency of Penfolds House Style while its age and complexity of flavours is acknowledged by its Rare Tawny classification. As Great Grandfather is produced using a Solera system and sourced from additionally matured Grandfather stocks, it will always retain every variety used, albeit in small amounts. Of the some 13 varieties identified the major varieties which form the backbone of the blend from year to year are Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet. The current Great Grandfather Solera contains a vintage span of 42 years with individual components covering 1960 to 2002 included. This large span of vintages ensures consistency and that the required level of age and youth for complexity and freshness is maintained. For the first 20 years components are matured in the Grandfather Solera. Further maturation occurs in old oak hogsheads before being blended and introduced into the three stage ‘Great Grandfather Solera’. Only the very best and oldest casks are used for the additional maturation of this wine. Seamless and integrated from start to finish. Dark fruitcake, milk and dark chocolate, coffee, vanillin and aniseed all in abundance. Toffee\/brûlée sugar with orange zest and marzipan add length and balance to the palate. The richness and weight of the wine are held in harmony by the spirit-acid balance, which conveys the long, persistent finish.
