His return was on the condition that the future direction of the winery was up to him. As a result he immediately decreased wine production by 60% resulting in an increase in quality by a far higher factor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite the ‘invasion’ of Tempranillo vine plantings everywhere in Rioja in the late 1980s, Alvaro stood firm in his belief in the use of the Garnacha grape, not least because he knew that the hotter, drier climate of Rioja Oriental was better suited to this variety.
