At the time they made the unusual choice of replanting the vineyard (after the ravages of phylloxera) with all the thirteen grape varieties allowed in the appellation as opposed to concentrating on the Grenache grape, which was the 'easiest' variety giving good fruit, alcohol and colour.

As a result, whereas 85% of the total red vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is planted with Grenache, this variety represents only 30% of the vineyard at Beaucastel - leaving 30% for Mourvedre, 10% each for Syrah and Counoise and 20% for the remaining nine varieties including about three percent of white. It is not surprising, therefore, that Beaucastel ages so well and develops such complexity.

The other principal distinguishing feature of the estate is that the grandfather of the current generation decided to go back to the old way of doing things in 1964: that is, he would no longer use any chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers. There would be a drop in yield of course, but as he saw it, a gain from the re-establishment of life chains in the soil and all the things which derive from doing things naturally, that we now know about. This was many years before the word 'organic' was used in the way that it is now, so Jacques Perrin was way ahead of his time.

The Perrin family continue to innovate and alongside their extraordinary work at Beaucastel they have developed throughout the southern Rhône Valley to become pre-eminent in the region. They have also undertaken a high profile joint venture in Provence with the owners of Miraval.

The Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet Rouge is often considered the baby Beaucastel. The 30 hectares of Coudoulet are located just east of the vineyard of Beaucastel on the other side of the A7 motorway. Here the soil has many similarities to that of Beaucastel. A blend of Grenache (40%), Mourvèdre (30%), Syrah (20%) and Cinsault (10%) the wine is aged for 6 months in oak foudres. The nose is powerful with intense notes of juniper, black olives and pepper. On the palate there is an explosion of red fruit, with floral and spicy notes, but with a very nice balance combining great freshness, a beautiful complexity, a soft texture and a nice acidity. In addition to prime vineyard holdings, the Perrin family are pioneers of sustainable farming, having converted to organic viticulture as early as 1950 and having farmed biodynamically since 1974. The vines are on average 50-years-old. They are planted on pudding stone soils, which are traditional to the Southern Rhône. These stones retain heat from the day and keep the vines warm at night, helping to ripen the grapes. The sub-soils are made up of sand, clay and limestone. At the winery, each variety is vinified separately and following malolactic fermentation, the varietals are then blended and the resulting wine is then aged in oak foudres for 6 months. The Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a deep-ruby in colour with purple reflections. The nose reveals a beautiful freshness and a seductive aromatic bouquet combining notes of red fruit, spices and white pepper with a hint of perfectly integrated toasted vanilla. Full bodied and very soft, the palate presents a very nice balance with freshness and flavours of black cherry jam. The finish is long with good intensity and velvety tannins.
