They met at the University of Stellenbosch when David had shifted his focus to viticulture after a rugby injury sidelined him from his first love. David went on to work vintages around the world, from Marlborough in New Zealand to St. Emilion in Bordeaux, France, before finally landing back in South Africa. He eventually took over the cellar in the Swartland where Andrea and Chris Mullineux used to make wine prior to their purchase of Roundstone Farm and restored it in 2014. His wife Nadia joined him in 2016 and it’s been a family affair ever since.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNadia oversees viticulture for their project and manages the vineyards that they lease. She employs biological farming, which is to say she avoids the use of any herbicides, plants cover crops and she’s begun experimenting with a conversion to organics. Their quest to nurture and restore low yielding old vineyards is an effort to breathe new life into the region’s enviable stock of old vines and shine a light on the qualities of the beautiful Swartland at large. More than that though, they are also establishing new vineyards, which they have planted to Grenache - their flagship variety along with Chenin Blanc. Their Chenin Blanc from the Swartland focusses on various Old Vine Vineyards, with plantings ranging from 1962 till 1984. The wine is based on granite from the Paardeberg, blended with shale\/schist from the east, more clay rich soils from the north and iron rich soils from the western parts of the Swartland. In total the wine is made from 7 vineyards, more than 10 pickings, different soils, different aspects, different vineyard ages, farmed by different people and different farmers. This wine perfectly illustrates the Swartland, its people and its old vineyards. Whole bunch pressed and naturally fermented, matured for 11 months in old neutral French oak barrels. Beautiful ripe, zingy golden apples and a tense fine boned acidity weaves its way through a succulent, fleshy but tensile body.
