Unusual for its time, only Shiraz was planted. Now on its 64th release, Mount Edelstone is the longest continuously produced single-vineyard Shiraz in Australia. The ancient 500-million-year-old soils are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from over 100 year-old dry-farmed, ungrafted centenarian vines. Organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyard are supported with under-vine mulching and permanent cover crops. Shiraz grapes from the 104-year-old vines were hand harvested in the cool of the morning. Individual blocks of this single vineyard were picked separately and remained so throughout the vinification process until the final blend was made. Once in the winery, the grapes were de-stemmed and lightly crushed into small, concrete, open-top fermenters. The fermentations were controlled with pump-overs being performed twice daily. After 7-10 days and just prior to reaching dryness, the fermentations were gently pressed to barrel with the primary fermentation finishing in 80% French and 20% American oak (19% new and 81% seasoned) hogshead barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for 18 months before blending and bottling. It was then aged for a further three years in bottle prior to its release. Deep crimson in colour Mount Edelstone Shiraz displays fragrant, spicy aromas of black pepper, sage, bay leaf and star anise that are interwoven with vibrant plum, blackberry and blueberry, and gentle notes of tarragon and cedar. This highly soft rock site insulates the drought-sensitive Riesling vines, which produce compact lime-green, moderate sized berries and bunches averaging 150 grams. The organic grapes were hand harvested and delivered promptly to the winery in small parcels, where they were crushed and destemmed. The fruit was then gently pressed and the free run juice was inoculated with neutral yeasts to preserve the natural expression of the vineyard in the final wine. Fermentation lasted two weeks and took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks in separate batches according to clone and vine age before blending and bottling. The Springvale Riesling has lemongrass and lime aromas, with a touch of floral lily notes and spring herbs. On the palate, the wine is bright, intense and powerful, with a tight structure and generous flavour profile of green apple, layers of citrus and touch of white pepper and a very long finish. A delicious Riesling when young, but also with great ageing potential. Voted ‘2020 Winery of the Year' at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards, Jim Barry produce highly acclaimed, award-winning wines. Grapes for this Watervale Riesling come from a special part of the famed 'Florita' vineyard in Watervale, in the Clare Valley. The grapes were harvested in the cool of the night, to minimise oxidation, phenolic extraction and preserve the flavours in the juice. The wine was vinified un-intrusively, to allow the Riesling to reflect its origins. Mouthwatering aromas of lemon, grapefruit juice, lime and white flowers combine with a lick of mineral, wet slate. The palate is refreshing and intense, the generosity of flavour shows all the hallmarks of Watervale Riesling, perfectly balanced by zesty acidity.
