The Shiraz brings backbone, flesh and body to the wine with the Grenache adding a soft, vibrant juiciness. Wallace is an ancestral name of Colin Glaetzer's wife, Judith, whose family hail from the old market town of Cupar in Fife, Scotland. Judith's Celtic ancestry is reflected in the three elements of the Wallace symbol - the Celtic cross, thistle and the Celtic knot pattern. This vintage is a blend of Shiraz (78%) and Grenache (22%) grapes sourced old vines grown in the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Old vine Barossa Grenache has a liveliness and structure that does not benefit from oak maturation and as such oak contact was minimised for the Grenache component to preserve the purity and animation of the fruit. The Shiraz was matured for 16 months in 2-3 year old oak hogshead barrels (80% French / 20% American). To the nose Wallace displays a lifted combination of bright red fruits with fresh spice notes of star anise and cedar. The palate has bright red berry fruit, redcurrant and liquorice flavours which complement the soft and rounded Grenache fruit tannin and the savoury finish of Shiraz. Lovely refreshing acidity provides both lift and depth. In mythology, the symbol meant the Roman goddess Venus or her Greek equivalent Aphrodite. But the sign has also been linked back to ancient Egypt - a nod to Bishop’s link to Amon-Ra and Anaperenna. The name Anaperenna has been inspired by Anna Perenna, the Roman goddess of the New Year. Anna Perenna symbolises the year's cycle and her name translates as 'enduring year'. Romans honoured Anna Perenna with a festival held on the first full moon of the Roman calendar. On March 15th they would ask Anna to grant them longevity, and a healthy year for each glass of wine they drank on that day. The symbol on the label is the Egyptian Ankh (pronounced: onk). Historically the ankh symbolised sunrise, regeneration, regrowth and renewal. The assemblage for this vintage is Shiraz (84%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (16%) matured for 16 months in 100% new oak hogshead barrels (92% French 8% American). The wine was bottled unfiltered to ensure minimal intervention with the wine’s natural characteristics. On the nose there is a heady bouquet of mulberries, blackcurrant, clove, aniseed and nutmeg. In Egyptian mythology, Amon-Ra is considered to be the king of all gods. The temple of Amon-Ra was believed to be the first temple to ever plant a monoculture vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple. The eye on front of the label is the all-seeing eye of Horus or wedjat ("whole one") - a powerful Egyptian symbol of protection. It is represented as a figure with six parts, corresponding to what Egyptians regarded as the six senses; touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell and thought. Ben created Amon-Ra Shiraz to appeal to all these six senses. The Amon-Ra Shiraz was matured for 16 months in 100% new oak hogshead barrels (95% French and 5% American) and matured on lees to maintain fruit profile and animation. Bottled unfiltered to ensure minimal intervention with the wine’s natural characteristics. Dark plum and blackberry notes are offset by hints of black pepper and wild forest herbs. The palate is intense and mouth-filling with the balance, complexity and focus expected from Amon-Ra. Powerful dark berry fruit is accented with delicate spice and herb notes. It inspires confidence in its age worthy nature. A wine that will develop beautifully with long term cellaring through to 2045. A wine with astounding power and complexity countered by exemplary elegance. To craft this wine Ben sourced extraordinary Shiraz fruit from four outstanding vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. The fruit was hand harvested from low yielding vines aged up to 110 years old. At the winery each parcel was fermented separately in small open fermenters and gently hand plunged. The wine was then matured for 16 months in 100% new French oak hogsheads with natural malolactic fermentation continuing in oak during maturation. The fine grained French hogsheads were of the highest quality with tannin profiles selected to best express the flavours of the individual parcels. Inky, opaque purple in colour with herbal aromas that accent a core of dark berry fruit. On the palate polished tannins balance the dominant fruit. Blackberries are layered over red, with mocha, liquorice and fresh-cut cedar. In Egyptian mythology, The Eye of Rã was the powerful feminine counterpart to the sun god Ra. The Eye’s forceful protective deeds were celebrated alongside its nurturing life giving gifts to Egypt.

PRESS REVIEW:

Matthew Jukes 19.5/20 "I was privileged to be the first person in the UK to taste the 2016 vintage of The Eye of Rã and a preview of the 2018 vintage of Ben Glaetzer’s extraordinary creation. I imagine this super-luxe cuvée will make it to the UK following the inaugural, stellar 2016, and when it does, I can assure you this is an even more expressive wine. I tasted 2018 The Eye of Rã the same week I tasted the 2020 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti releases, Spottswoode’s as yet unreleased 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, and on the same day that I tasted 2020 Ornellaia – all wines with immense scores in my notes and, of course, all world-class creations. But more impressive, certainly to me, was the reaction from two South Australian members of the wine trade fraternity, neither of whom has any affiliation with Mr Glaetzer, who were both struck dumb by this wine. They happened to be around on the day I opened this bottle, so I brought it along to a couple of meetings for them to taste. One was open-mouthed, performing goldfish impressions, while the other was almost moved to tears as it brought back memories that she described as the ‘essence of the Barossa’! When a wine has this degree of deliciousness, extraordinary build quality, and perhaps most importantly, a massive emotional hook, it does its job perfectly. Made from the finest parcel of fruit in Ben’s Ebenezer vineyard, this is a wine that does not waver from its mission to graffiti Ben’s name on your palate with indelible Shiraz ink. The volume of fruit is staggering, but its delivery is incredibly measured and even, and this is the trick. Rã is not a monster wine but a monstrously long wine. It is perfectly polished and amazingly spicy, with never-ending layers of fruit and immense class. It is also drinking well, which is a surprise, but the 2018 vintage is generous with seamless fruit and unique allure. I feel it will maintain its welcoming and rewarding attitude for two decades, so you are in no hurry to pop a cork! While this icon wine has an iconic flavour, I must urge you to seek it out. Imagine all of Ben’s experience and skill in just one bottle – Rã is it." [#intro] Astounding power & complexity countered by exemplary elegance, the epitome of Barossa Shiraz...[/intro]

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0106/1539/0266/collections/Collection_Image_7c9e2a11-d958-4e59-bb95-7de515636868.jpg?v=1538638025
