Voted ‘Vintner of the Year’ by food and wine magazine Falstaff, Heidi leads an organisation dedicated to promoting female winemakers. As a result of her work, the number of women working in the Austrian wine industry has increased considerably in recent years.

Heidi took over her family’s 10-hectare estate in 1983, in the famous village of Rust, Burgenland, just five miles from the Hungarian border. Her southeast-facing vineyards are planted along the western banks of Lake Neusiedl, on sandy soils with clay, gravel, grey quartz and schist. They form a semi-amphitheatre, providing considerably more sunlight hours compared to the rest of Austria. Here, Heidi sustainably cultivates the classic Austrian varieties, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St Laurent. She is also pioneering the revival of traditional varieties, such as Furmint which was widely planted before the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

The labels feature the old, green wooden gate from Heidi’s winery, just off the town square and highlight her twin sons’ involvement in the family business since 2019. While Furmint is famously recognized across the nearby Hungarian border, pioneering winemaker Heidi Schröck has spearheaded its glorious revival on Austrian soil. Grown in a sun-drenched semi-amphitheatre near Lake Neusiedl, the vines thrive in unique "Rust gravel" soils composed of crystalline rock, quartz, and schist, giving the fruit an incredible natural clarity, tension, and a distinct mineral backbone. The winemaking philosophy highlights texture and varietal purity. Hand-harvested grapes are gently pressed, with the majority fermented in stainless steel to protect the bright, lively acidity, while a portion is meticulously aged in large neutral acacia wooden casks on its fine lees. The result is a luminous golden-yellow pour that opens with intense aromas of ripe yellow pear, orchard blossom, chamomile, and a hint of fresh hay. On the palate, it delivers a bone-dry, beautifully bundled energy that balances a rich, slightly smoky fleshiness with a saline, mouthwatering finish. This characterful white makes for an exceptional dinner companion. Its superb texture and vibrant crispness make it a wonderful pairing for slow-roasted pork belly, grilled white fish, or creamy woodland mushroom risottos. It is an adventurous, deeply rewarding bottle that offers a captivating alternative for anyone looking to step out of their usual white wine comfort zone. [#intro]A uniquely aromatic & textural dry Furmint, aged on its lees in large acacia casks...[/intro]

Heidi Schröck & Söhne 'Junge Löwen' (meaning 'young lions') is a fresh and juicy red wine made from Blaufränkisch (85%) and St. Laurent (15%). The grapes for the Junge Löwen were sourced from the `Ruster` vineyard, which lies on the top of the Rust Hill surrounding Lake Neusiedl, facing eastwards. Sustainable viticulture practices are followed, without the use of herbicides or insecticides and the growth of local plants as cover crops is encouraged. At the winery the Blaufränkisch was fermented in stainless steel tanks and the St. Laurent in an open fermenter. After pressing, the wines were transferred to large Austrian oak barrels (up to 60 years old) where they underwent malolactic fermentation. After six months the wines were then blended, spending a total of 10 months in oak before bottling. 'Junge Löwen’ is ruby red in colour, with aromas of raspberry, black pepper, and violets.
