He does not own any vineyards but has charmed his way into some prime sites across Stellenbosch, Swartland and Paarl. Combining magical old vineyards that, in Lukas’ words, “give a real nervous energy” with a love for the cool climate regions of Europe; particularly the Loire Valley, it is not surprising that his young wines are some of the most electrifying in South Africa today.

As a lover of acidity and lower alcohol levels Lukas is an early picker. Although based in Stellenbosch, “my harvest starts at the same time as the guys in the Swartland. But it goes way on! I like to blend different pickings and if the conditions are good then I leave a little bit to really benefit from extended hang time”. Lukas is perhaps most famous for his two dazzling Chenin Blancs (Kamaraderie and Trust Your Gut) and Breton, a fabulous Loire Valley inspired Cabernet Franc. He also works with Cinsault and Syrah and, unsurprisingly, these are some of the most refined examples around. And don’t miss his pale, Provence-style Rose!

The Lukas Van Loggerenberg 'Breton' Cabernet Franc is made up of two parcels of grapes, the majority from Klein Welmoed Farm (65%) which was planted in 2008 and the remaining 35% from Bluegum Grove Farm on the Vlaeberg Road planted in 2004. The grapes are picked and vinified separately and only blended before bottling. In the cellar 30% of the final wine was whole bunch fermented while the destemmed grapes were left on their skins for two weeks after alcoholic fermentation to add depth to the mid palate. Only one punch down was done per day. After pressing, the three parcels underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel on their own. The different components were blended after 10 months in barrel and bottled right after. No enzymes or commercial yeasts were used in making the wines. Breton is from the old French name in the Loire for Cabernet Franc. Lukas chose this name as it was in the Loire valley where he made the final decision to start Van Loggerenberg Wines. The silhouette of the woman symbolises the elegance of Cabernet Franc and is emphasised again by the Percheron horse. The Percheron breed is always perceived as this rough brute of a horse but in Lukas' view it is very elegant and in that way similar to Cabernet Franc; firm but with great elegance to it. The landmark on the label is in the Bluegum Grove vineyard used in the wine, while the stamp shows a Donnie Merino sheep, which was first cloned on Elsenburg and is symbolic of Lukas's studies there.[#intro]Old world in style Lukas Van Loggerenberg's Breton is Loire meets Stellenbosch...[/intro]

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0106/1539/0266/collections/Lukas_Van_Loggerenberg_Logo_copy.jpg?v=1720116544
