It was founded in Elciego (Álava) in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga and from the very outset it has been a point of reference in the winemaking industry at both a national and international level.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMarqués de Riscal has access to approximately 1500 hectares of vineyards spread between Elciego and the neighbouring villages of Leza, Laguardia and Villabuena; 500 hectares of their own vineyards and the remainder grown under control of the cellar. This sub zone of the Rioja Alavesa has traditionally been best known for producing wines with good ageing potential, thanks in part to the high acidity and good tannin structure of the musts obtained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince 1972, Riscal have also pioneered the wine region of Rueda in order to produce high quality white wines primarily from the indigenous Verdejo grape.
