Established in 1980 by Dr Michael Peterkin, the winery's foundation was guided by an analytical mind. Having graduated in medicine from the University of Western Australia before gaining an oenology degree from Roseworthy Agricultural College, Michael successfully juggled the demanding dual vocations of a country doctor and a pioneer winemaker for twenty-five years. He was anything but conventional when planting his estate, consciously going against the customary regional methodologies of the time. He oriented his vine rows north-to-south to capture up to a fifth more sunlight and introduced pioneering high-density spacing. By packing between 4,000 and 5,500 vines per hectare—more than double the conventional Australian average—he forced the roots to compete, naturally balancing the fruit yield and intensifying the ultimate flavour profile of the grapes.

This meticulous, high-density viticulture results in a portfolio that seamlessly marries the traditional, handmade techniques of the Old World with the clean technology of the New World. At the absolute summit of their production sits the iconic Pierro Margaret River Chardonnay, a white wine of monumental power, intense stone-fruit concentration, and a smooth, silky delivery that has long served as the blueprint for premium Australian Chardonnay. In the red racks, this same precision translates into stunning structural grace. The estate Pierro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve showcases a complex weave of dark forest fruits, gamey undertones, and a chalky, fine-grained tannin structure, while the Pierro L.T.C.F introduces a clever, aromatic lift by blending classic Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a subtle, fragrant touch of Cabernet Franc.

The story extends beautifully down the road to the Fire Gully vineyard, a pristine site owned by Michael since 1988. Crafted by the exact same winemaking team at the Pierro cellars but released under a separate, highly sought-after label, these single-vineyard expressions offer a remarkably elegant, slightly softer entry point to the Wilyabrup terroir. The Fire Gully Chardonnay delivers a svelte, refined display of fresh lime, pear, and delicate creaminess, while the Fire Gully Shiraz and Fire Gully Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve emphasize purity, supple textures, and a beautifully handled, supportive touch of French oak that ensures immediate approachability.

The incredible depth, vibrant acidity, and polished textures across both labels make them phenomenal partners for a broad range of classic cooking. The opulent estate Chardonnay and the delicate Fire Gully white are natural foils for rich seafood and poultry, pairing magnificently with pan-seared scallops in garlic butter, roasted corn-fed chicken, or a decadent salmon en croûte. Meanwhile, the savory depth and fine tannins of the Cabernet blends have the poise to cut through richer meats, making them a sublime choice alongside a traditional roast leg of lamb, a prime fillet steak, or a slow-simmered beef brisket.

PIERRO

From the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia, the Pierro 'Fire Gully' Chardonnay is made from hand picked grapes sourced from the 20-to-30 year old vines grown at the Fire Gully farm and vineyard. Working at Cullen’s at the time, the wine went on to win a trophy at the Perth Royal Show. In 1980 he was so convinced of the blend’s potential in Margaret River he devoted a third of the Pierro plantings to the varieties. Les Trois Cuvees was the original name for the wine, which those in the trade knew as the L.T.C. A few years later the French started dropping atom bombs in the pacific and anything that contained a connotation to being associated with the French was dead in the water. So the name was changed to Pierro Semillon Sauvigon Blanc. But people kept asking about where the 'L.T.C.' had gone. So, the name was changed to Semillon Sauvignon Blanc L.T.C. Although the name L.T.C. originally stood for 'Les Trois Cuvees', over time at the cellar door numerous guests postulated on what L.T.C. was an acronym for. One day in summer a lady arrived and asked whether L.T.C. stood for "a Little Touch of Chardonnay' and the staff member serving replied with "well yes, I guess it does". Moving forward 15 years and L.T.C. standing for a little touch of Chardonnay had stuck. So much that most people drinking it just called it by the letters. The varietal composition of the blend contains Semillon (50%) which gives the wine the ability to mature gracefully, Sauvignon Blanc (43%) to provide the delicate perfumed aroma and youthful fresh flavour and Chardonnay (7%) which completes the wine providing body power. L.T.C. is a light dry wine, delicious when young but has the capacity and backbone to mature and develop in the bottle. Flavours of citrus, pear, green apple, melon and tropical fruit. Fresh, crisp and dry with both complexity and elegance. Every wine tells a story and this is the story of Cabernet Sauvignon, the flagship red grape variety of Margaret River. The original Cabernet vines were introduced to Western Australia between 1836 and 1895, most likely from South Africa. In the 1930s the legendary Houghton winemaker Jack Mann took cuttings from selected old bush vines in the Swan Valley and established a 1.6 hectare planting known as the "Houghton Cabernet Block". He was firmly of the view that grapes from this block could be used to make outstanding wine. In the 1960's the Department of Agriculture, through several years of evaluation, refined this block and selected the best quality vines, 21 in all from a planting of 2,200. These vines were planted in "foundation blocks" at Gin Gin in 1970 and at Frankland River in 1973. Over the next 40 years these vines were further evaluated and, in 2012, six "super" selections were released. The team at Pierro have chosen what they consider the best three to form the basis of this wine. Hand picked, bunch and berry selected prior to fermentation as whole berries in open-top fermenters. Hand plunged with 39 days on skins prior to pressing and maturing in oak barrique for 18 months. A leafy, delicate Cabernet Sauvignon, with very finely milled tannins and layers of red and purple fruit in the mouth. A cool mineral profile, and a gentle chalkiness on the middle palate highlight the fruit. Hints of coffee bean, mint and bay leaf add complex layers to this understated wine, which finishes with salinity and great elegance.
