Tracing its origins back to Roman times, the vineyard of Château Bélair is situated at the highest point of Saint-Émilion’s famed limestone plateau. Château Magdelaine, a contiguous cru acquired in 1952, has always been renowned for the remarkable elegance of its wines. Château Bélair-Monange expresses the unique style of the greatest parcels of these two complementary terroirs. An important restructuring of the vineyard was initiated in 2008 immediately following the acquisition of the estate by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix. Another wine embodying the inherent qualities of the vineyard – minerality, concentration of red berries, balance and length – emerged in 2014: ANNONCE DE BÉLAIR-MONANGE Produced in very limited quantities, ANNONCE enjoys the same attention as the Grand Vin: meticulous vineyard work undertaken with respect for the environment followed by a manual harvest once the grapes have reached optimal maturity. Vinification takes place in concrete and stainless-steel vats, where maceration and extraction are gentle and measured in order to allow the fruit its highest expression. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels. Although ANNONCE exhibits great charm in its youth, a few years of cellaring or a few hours of decanting will be largely rewarded. Since Aymeric de Gironde arrived at the estate in late 2017, the ultra powerful \"shock and awe\" style of the 2000s is out, and a new refinement is in. Of course, the deep clays that define the core vineyards around the château itself are never likely to produce light or ephemeral wines, but de Gironde has astutely understood that (to develop an analogy), when driving down hill, one can ease off on the accelerator. The 2019 Troplong Mondot is a ringing endorsement of the new direction, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of wild berries, violets, coniferous forest floor, licorice, raw cocoa and subtle spices, followed by a full-bodied, velvety and layered palate that's seamless and perfumed, its enveloping core of succulent fruit framed by rich, powdery tannins and lively acids. The pH is 3.55—pretty incredible when you consider the alcohol is nearly 15%! I hasten to add that from tasting, I would have guessed this was 14.3% to 14.5% alcohol. It is the kind of wine with so much energy it practically does pirouettes on your palate. Opaque purple-black colored, the nose is fantastically floral, bursting from the glass with notes of candied violets, red roses and lavender over a core of plum preserves, wild blueberries and black raspberries with touches of garrigue, tilled soil, wild fungi and crushed rocks plus a waft of powdered cinnamon. The medium-bodied palate is like a tightly coiled spring, featuring beautifully knit layers of black and red fruits, earth and floral notes within a firm, fine-grained frame and bags of freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. This is a far cry from the old-school style of Troplong Mondot from a few years back, and it is incredibly impressive. Sourced from the prestigious Edmond de Rothschild heritage estate, the 2016 vintage is widely regarded as classic and age-worthy, making this 1.5 litre format a showstopper for collectors, hosts, or serious wine enthusiasts. A Magnum is the ultimate choice for a fine Bordeaux, as the larger volume and reduced oxygen exposure relative to the wine's mass allow for a slower, more graceful evolution in the bottle. This means the 2016 is only just beginning its prime drinking window and offers superb cellar potential for years to come. This wine showcases the elegance and power that Puisseguin Saint-Émilion is known for. Deep, intense ruby red in colour the nose is complex and evolving, offering rich notes of dark cherry, plum, and blackcurrant, underpinned by hints of tobacco leaf and cedar spice. The palate is powerful yet supple. The initial approach is structured, filled with concentrated dark fruit flavours. The tannins are fine-grained and velvety, providing an excellent framework. A lovely persistent finish reveals touches of cocoa and vanilla from its time in French oak.
