Grant has been crafting wines in the Otago region since 1993 when there were only 20 hectares of vineyards planted and today there are over 2,000. As a pioneering winemaker in Otago, Grant produced the first vintages for many of the region’s iconic wineries including Mt Difficulty, Felton Road, Carrick, Peregrine, Mount Edward, Hawkshead, Mondillo, Bald Hills, and Rockburn, but now the serious focus is on his own creation, Valli.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEstablished in 1998 and named after his Great-Great Grandfather, Giuseppe Valli, who immigrated to New Zealand from an Italian winemaking background, Grant founded Valli with the aim of creating true representations of Otago’s subregions with unflinching intensity and purity. In 2015, established Otago winemaker Jen Parr joined Grant in the winery where the pair aims to create wines with honesty, integrity, and most importantly, a sense of place. This was the first vineyard in the valley to be planted in the true North-to-South direction and as such maximises the amount of sunlight hours the Pinot Noir vines receive, contributing dramatically to the uniform ripening of fruit, a critical factor in Pinot Noir quality. Gibbston, one of the coolest sub regions of Otago, has one of the slowest ripening seasons. A key factor in quality Pinot Noir from such a cool area is long hang time, that is, the amount of time the grapes are on the vine; this allows them to develop elegance and complexity of flavour. Valli's Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir is matured in oak for 11 months (30% new) and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine displays aromas of plum, mulled spices, rosemary and peppercorn. The intense perfume flows onto the palate with more baking spices, dried florals, cedar, and dark red fruit.
