The project pioneered grape growing in the cooler Licantén, a coastal sub-region of Chile's Curicó Valley. Focusing only on red wine grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Carignan and Petit Verdot) their aim was to produce fresher, more terroir-driven wines. Due to its unique ‘microclimate’ - a combination of refreshing ocean breezes and ancient metamorphic soils - the sub-region of Licantén has now been recognised as a new geographical denomination (D.O.) in Chile and to date Viña La Ronciere owns the only vineyards to be established there.

The three Orueta brothers – José Antonio, Andres and Alejandro, who run the winery – developed a detailed study of specific soils and terroir's to decide which grapes to plant in each parcel. Using precision viticulture and technology, they assigned each grape variety to the best possible plots for the development of their full potential. They make use of modern techniques of vine management and winemaking to achieve the highest quality in the final wines. They are also certified by the Wines of Chile Sustainability Code, which means that they are committed to implement long-term initiatives to guarantee a sustainable development.

Viña La Ronciere Website

The Viña La Ronciere Licantén Merlot is a mellow and complex red wine made from slow-ripening grapes located by the sea in the Licantén D.O.; one of only four new DOs recognised in 2018, for its unique terroir. Viña La Ronciere is the only producer in this sub-region of the Curicó Valley. They grow the grapes for this wine at Idahue Estate, where they combine traditional methods with precision techniques to produce fresh, coastal and terroir-driven red wines. Matured for 10 months in French oak the Licantén Merlot displays an intense concentration of fruit, with aromas of blackberries and spice. The palate is generous and deep, with a perfect acid balance and structure. It has a graceful, lengthy finish.
