It is planted widely in the granite hills of the Dão wine region located to the centre of Portugal. The best examples of Encruzado have delicate aromas of roses and violets, light citrus notes, a touch of resin and, in certain conditions, intensely mineral notes. Amongst its virtues is the ability to maintain almost perfect balance between sugar and acidity, making serious, rich, structured wines with extraordinary ageing potential. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks after which the wines underwent extended periods of ageing in used 225-litre French oak barriques. After several tastings of the component parts, the final blend was assembled and left for a period of time to marry before being bottled. Bright golden in colour, the Branco Especial has huge intensity and complexity of aroma on the nose with well-defined aromas of apple, dried fruits and honey married with brioche and warm spicy notes. The wine is rich with extraordinary body on the palate balanced by a lively acidity. Both vineyards sit at between 500-550m. The grapes were fermented in small stainless steel tanks, then aged on lees (lightly stirred) in large, used 500l oak barrels for eight months, allowing the varieties and terroir to shine. A beautiful golden colour given by the maturation and richness of Encruzado and Bical grapes. The subtle aromatics are dominated by a complex bouquet of white fruit, herbs, and minerality.
