It is grown primarily in the village of Montefalco and the surrounding area but production is still relatively limited and the wine is not widely known outside Italy.

Sagrantino has one of the highest tannic levels of any grape variety in the world and creates wines that are inky purple with an almost-black centre. The bouquet is one of dark, brooding red fruits with hints of plum, cinnamon, and earth.

The origins of the grape are widely disputed, but what is known is that it was used primarily for dessert wines for many years, the grape being dried in the passito style, yielding a thick, syrupy wine with raisin and blueberry qualities, much like a Recioto di Valpolicella. Beginning in 1976, however, the wines were made in a dry style, and that is how they are primarily produced today.

Australia has now seen forms of this varietal wine from a number of wineries who produce varying styles of Sagrantino.

The Antonelli Montefalco Rosso is a red wine blend of Sangiovese (70%), Sagrantino (15%) and Montepulciano (15%) grapes, organically grown on the family estate in Montefalco. Each grape variety is fermented separately, before being blended and aged in large oak barrels for 12 months. Ruby red in colour the Montefalco Rosso displays intense fruity aromas, with hints of cherry and wild berries. Little known outside of Italy Sagrantino di Montefalco is characterised by its great structure and capacity for longevity. Antonelli's organically grown Sagrantino grapes undergo gravity-fed fermentation in contact with the skins, thereafter clarification occurs spontaneously without the need for clarification. The wine is then matured in large oak barrels for at least 18 months and then settles in glass lined cement vats for some months before being bottled. Sagrantino di Montefalco requires a minimum 37 months ageing prior to its release. Intense ruby red in colour the nose is rich and powerful, ethereal and very complex with notes of fruit and aromatic herbs, featuring citrus, cherry, wild berry, mint and oregano. The palate is structured, with firm integrated tannins and a perfect partner with grilled and roast meats, stewed red meats, game and mature hard cheeses. Sagrantino will generally reache full maturity after 10-15 years from the harvest; however it is able to bottle age for more than 30 years. Maturation takes place in large oak barrels for at least 30 months, followed by some months in glass lined cement vats before being bottled unfiltered, where it rests for a further 2 years prior to release.
