Named in honour of the Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, and agriculture, the wine originates from a tiny, 22-metre-wide strip of hard red rock within the Clare Valley's Rockwood vineyard that produces fruit of extraordinary generosity. Recognising that these grapes mirrored the profile of the great European Rieslings, Grosset made the decision to bottle them entirely on their own to showcase this highly unique parcel of land. In the winery, the approach to Alea is famously gentle and uncomplicated. The harvest is lightly pressed, using only the finest free-run juice, before a cool, slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks. To ensure the absolute purest expression of both the grape and the terroir, no oak is used, no fining agents are added, and a minimal touch of sulphur remains the sole addition. Pouring brilliantly clear in the glass, Alea is wonderfully bright and expressive. It immediately offers pronounced aromatics dominated by notes of preserved lemon. On the palate, the wine is superbly balanced, delivering an intense, mouth-watering freshness that is anchored by a strong, lingering core of zesty lime juice. With its generous texture and crisp acidity, this sophisticated white wine is a superb match for fragrant and lightly spiced dishes. It pairs wonderfully alongside a classic Thai green curry, pan-seared king prawns, or a fresh Asian noodle salad.
