Quinta de Azevedo | Vinho Verde

Quinta de Azeveda estate in Vinho Verde Portugal

Fernando Guedes acquired Quinta de Azevedo in 1982 and immediately set out to completely redefine what Portuguese Vinho Verde could be. Located in a cool, wet corner of north-western Portugal—framed by the Atlantic Ocean and the dramatic Serra do Marão mountains—this region was historically known for rustic winemaking. Vines were traditionally grown on towering, overhead pergola systems so farmers could plant other crops underneath them. Recognizing that this shaded, cramped method kept the grapes from ripening properly, Fernando pioneered a massive shift to modern, low-to-the-ground vine rows. This simple change allowed the sun and breezy air to circulate freely, leading to the estate's historic first vintage in 1990 and setting a brand-new benchmark for quality across the entire region.

Today, winemaker António Braga and his team continue this legacy of innovation from their home base in the Barcelos commune. The 35 hectares of estate vineyards are dedicated to two exceptional native grape varieties: Loureiro and Alvarinho. To lock in the absolute peak of fruit purity, the team uses cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks, ensuring none of the grape's natural brightness is lost to heavy oak. The delicate Loureiro grapes infuse the wine with gorgeous floral aromas of lime blossom and bay leaf, while the Alvarinho brings rich stone fruit flavours, mouth-watering structure, and a beautiful, mineral complexity.

For anyone who loves a white wine that is intensely crisp, aromatic, and completely revitalising, this collection is an absolute joy. Far from the thin, sharp styles of the past, these wines offer a precise balance of juicy green apples, fresh citrus, and peach flavours, finished with a signature, vibrant crispness. They are incredibly easygoing and make the ultimate partner for sunny afternoons and fresh seafood. Sip them chilled alongside garlic chilli prawns, traditional beer-battered fish and chips, or a light summer pasta dish.
