THE LOIRE

Often called the "Garden of France," the Loire Valley is a sprawling region that follows the path of the country’s longest river. Because it stretches from the Atlantic coast deep into the heart of the interior, it offers an incredible variety of styles, from bracingly dry whites to elegant, food-friendly reds and traditional method sparkling wines. The region is defined by its cool climate, which ensures every bottle possesses a signature freshness and high-toned acidity.

In the far west, near the ocean, Muscadet provides the ultimate maritime white—bone-dry and saline, it is the classic partner for fresh oysters. Moving inland to the central "Garden," the landscape is dominated by Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Here, the tuffeau limestone soils produce everything from the crisp, honeyed whites of Vouvray to the structured, raspberry-scented reds of Chinon and Saumur-Champigny.

The "Upper Loire" to the east is the spiritual home of Sauvignon Blanc. The fabled vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé set the global standard for the variety, delivering wines of intense minerality, citrus, and gunflint smoke.
