Vineyards in the Alentejo wine region of Portugal

The Alentejo is a massive, sun-baked region in the south of Portugal, famous for its sweeping golden plains, ancient cork oaks, and a wonderfully relaxed pace of life. The hot, dry climate here is absolutely perfect for ripening grapes fully, resulting in some of the most generous and approachable wines in the country.

The red wines are the undeniable stars. Crafted from sun-loving grapes like Aragonês, Trincadeira, and the intensely dark Alicante Bouschet, they are famous for being incredibly rich, smooth, and packed with sweet, jammy fruit flavours. Because they are so soft and velvety, these reds are incredibly welcoming and make a fantastic choice for a hearty roast or sharing with friends around the table.

Despite the intense summer heat, the region also produces surprisingly vibrant white wines. Local grapes such as Antão Vaz create beautifully textured, aromatic whites with notes of ripe tropical fruit, peach, and honey. They provide a bright, balanced contrast to the famous reds and offer a fantastic introduction to southern Portuguese winemaking.
