LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON

The Languedoc-Roussillon is France’s most vast and dynamic wine frontier, stretching along the Mediterranean coast from the Rhône delta to the Spanish border. Long known as a high-volume producer, the region has undergone a dramatic quality revolution, led by artisanal winemakers who have embraced the rugged landscape and ancient vines to produce wines of incredible character and exceptional value.

The landscape is a patchwork of "garrigue"—the wild Mediterranean scrubland—and its scents of rosemary, thyme, and lavender often find their way into the local red wines. Dominated by Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, these reds are typically bold, spicy, and sun-drenched, yet they maintain a surprising freshness thanks to the cooling influence of the sea and the nearby mountains. From the schist soils of Faugères to the historic hills of Corbières, the diversity of styles is unmatched.

White wines are equally impressive, ranging from the zesty, saline-edged Picpoul de Pinet - the ultimate partner for seafood - to the rich, textured blends of the Roussillon. The region is also the birthplace of sparkling wine; Blanquette de Limoux has been produced in the foothills of the Pyrenees since the 16th century, predating Champagne.
