
Tucked away in the mountainous heart of Portugal, the Dão region is celebrated for producing wines of pure elegance. Surrounded on all sides by towering peaks and pine forests, the vineyards here sit on high-altitude, granite soils, perfectly protected from harsh coastal winds and intense summer heat. This sheltered environment allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, creating some of the country's most graceful and long-lived wines.
The Dão is famous for red wines that are beautifully smooth, highly structured, and incredibly fresh. Grapes like the noble Touriga Nacional thrive here, producing deeply aromatic wines packed with notes of crushed violets, dark berries, and a subtle, earthy spice. The region also crafts outstanding, complex white wines from the local Encruzado grape, which are wonderfully textured and brilliant companions for roasted poultry or creamy dishes.
Just to the northwest sits the tiny, often-overlooked region of Lafões. Nestled in a transitional zone between the mountains and the coast, Lafões produces wines with a completely different, energetic character. The whites are incredibly crisp and zesty, while the reds are light-bodied and refreshing, offering a brilliant, lively contrast to the smooth elegance of its famous neighbour.
