Lazio is a region defined by its history and its volcanic landscape, wrapping around the ancient city of Rome. For centuries, the vineyards here have quenched the thirst of the capital, benefiting from the fertile, mineral-rich soils left behind by ancient eruptions. While the region was long associated with simple, easy-drinking white wines for the city’s trattorias, a new generation of winemakers is now focusing on quality and character, reviving ancient grapes and forgotten vineyards.
The most famous name in the region is Frascati. Grown in the Castelli Romani hills overlooking Rome, these white wines—primarily made from Malvasia and Trebbiano—are celebrated for their bright acidity and stone fruit flavours. However, the true "hidden gem" of Lazio is the red Cesanese grape. Grown in the high-altitude vineyards of the interior, it produces elegant, spicy red wines with a unique personality that is starting to gain international recognition. From the volcanic lakes to the rugged hillsides, Lazio offers a taste of the Mediterranean that is deeply connected to the heritage of the Eternal City.
