Located at the northern end of the famous Left Bank, Saint-Estèphe is the brilliant, robust powerhouse of Bordeaux. Led by spectacular, forward-thinking estates like Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose, the wines from this appellation are wonderfully deep, earthy, and full of character.
Because the soils here contain slightly more clay than its southern neighbours, this is the region to explore if you enjoy a red wine with a bold, uncompromising personality. A classic Saint-Estèphe delivers an incredibly satisfying mouthful of rich, dark fruits, often mingled with warming spices and a lovely, savoury earthiness. While built predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, winemakers here often blend in a little more Merlot, giving the wine a beautifully plush, juicy core that makes it a joy to drink.
Saint-Estèphe offers some of the most fantastic character in the region. It is a deeply comforting, structured wine that absolutely sings when poured alongside hearty, slow-roasted meats, rich casseroles, or a brilliant mature cheddar.
