Valdeorras

Tucked away in the mountainous inland corners of Galicia, the Valdeorras wine region is one of Spain’s most exciting and dynamic areas. The name literally translates to "Valley of Gold," a nod to its ancient Roman mining history. Today, the true treasure found along the steep, terraced banks of the River Sil is world-class winemaking. This rugged, high-altitude landscape is defined by its striking slate and granite soils, providing the perfect foundation for producing incredibly energetic and expressive Galician wines.

The absolute star of the region is the Godello grape. While the coastal areas are famous for Albariño, Valdeorras is the undisputed home of this brilliant white variety. It produces a phenomenal Spanish white wine that perfectly balances bright citrus freshness with a wonderfully smooth, rounded texture and a distinctive stony edge. It offers a little more weight and richness than a typical coastal white, making it a fantastic, food-friendly option.

Alongside the whites, the region also crafts exceptional Spanish red wine using the native Mencía grape. These reds are vibrant, lively, and packed with flavours of crushed red berries, wild herbs, and a subtle earthy character. Unlike heavy, oak-dominated reds, a Valdeorras Mencía is incredibly fresh, bright, and approachable.

Both the red and white wines from this spectacular mountain valley are brilliantly versatile for dining. The textural Godello pairs effortlessly with roast poultry, creamy mushroom dishes, or rich seafood, while the bright Mencía is a perfect match for charcuterie, grilled pork, or simple tomato-based pasta dishes.
