El Enemigo Vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina

El Enemigo was founded in 2010 by Adrianna Catena, daughter of the legendary wine pioneer Nicolás Catena Zapata, alongside Alejandro Vigil, the highly acclaimed head winemaker of Bodega Catena Zapata. The estate was born from a fierce desire to carve a unique path away from tradition and a shared obsession with high-altitude viticulture. Meaning 'the enemy', the name serves as a direct nod to the internal battles, self-doubt, and immense challenges faced when pushing the boundaries of excellence and daring to challenge the winemaking status quo.

The core vineyards are situated in the Piedemonte al Sur region of Mendoza, stretching south of Luján de Cuyo at breathtaking elevations between 930 and 1,470 metres above sea level. This extreme mountain environment exposes the vines to intense solar radiation and massive diurnal temperature shifts—the drop in temperature between day and night. These harsh alpine factors slow the ripening process perfectly, allowing the grapes to retain a vibrant, natural acidity and develop thick skins that yield remarkably concentrated flavours and elegant, fine-grained tannins.

The winemaking philosophy centers on capturing the crisp freshness and authentic character of each individual sub-parcel. While Mendoza is famous for Malbec, this estate has captured global attention by championing Cabernet Franc, creating exceptionally pure, mineral-inflected styles inspired by old-world Pomerol and Loire traditions. Through a restless spirit of experimentation and a reliance on large, traditional un-toasted oak foudres, Vigil crafts highly sought-after, captivating Argentine wines that offer a raw, complex, and unadulterated expression of their exceptional high-altitude terroir.
