Al-Muvedre Monastrell Vineyards in Alicante

The revival of legendary historical landscapes is the defining force behind the Al-Muvedre project. Established in 2001 by renowned winemaker Telmo Rodríguez and his business partner Pablo Eguzkiza, this focused venture was born after an eye-opening trip to Alicante in southeastern Spain. The duo uncovered a treasure trove of overlooked old vines steeped in a rich viticultural heritage. During the sixteenth century, the sweet, unfortified rancios of the region rivalled the finest sherries and ports of the world, and the area later thrived in the nineteenth century by initially escaping the devastating phylloxera louse that crippled the rest of European winemaking. As the insect eventually arrived and consumer tastes shifted away from sweet styles, this golden era came to a swift end, leaving behind forgotten fields of immense potential.

The extraordinary character of this single-wine project is deeply anchored in the rugged, sun-baked Mediterranean landscape. The vineyards are planted on poor, calcareous soils composed of sandy loam, layered with heat-retaining pebbles on the surface that radiate warmth back up to the canopy during the night. This harsh environment forces the ancient Monastrell vines—also known internationally as Mourvèdre—to dig their roots incredibly deep to find moisture. This natural struggle results in naturally low-yielding bushes that produce small, exceptionally thick-skinned berries. The intense solar heat is balanced by cooling breezes coming off the nearby coast, slowing down the ripening process perfectly to lock in an elegant mineral core alongside rich fruit concentration.

For the everyday drinker looking to experience authentic Spanish winemaking, this collection offers an entry point into a historic powerhouse grape. Telmo and Pablo were inspired to launch the estate after the president of the International Wine Academy, Dr Parce, revealed that the finest Mourvèdre he had ever tasted in his life originated from these exact mountains. The resulting wine is a pure, unpretentious expression of the region, bursting with juicy dark blackberries, wild thyme, black pepper, and a distinctive flinty undertone. Supple and structurally vibrant, Al-Muvedre Alicante wines avoid heavy oak manipulation to let the raw fruit shine, making them sensational when paired with robust everyday dishes like chorizo pasta, slow-roasted belly pork, or a rich, smoky barbecue beef burger.
