Bodega Garzón is an acclaimed family-owned winery in Maldonado, situated on the pristine Atlantic coast of southern Uruguay. As the definitive standard-bearer for premium wines from the region, their pioneering status was globally recognised when they were named ‘New World Winery of the Year’ by Wine Enthusiast.
The story began in 2007 when owner Alejandro Bulgheroni invited world-renowned consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini to visit his 700-hectare olive farm, beautifully nestled between the historic town of Garzón and the ocean. Captivated by the stunning rolling hills, Antonini immediately likened the landscape to his native Tuscany. Rigorous analysis of the unique terroir revealed an extraordinary potential for viticulture. The estate initially planted Tannat - Uruguay’s flagship red variety - and the white grape Albariño, after identifying striking similarities to Galicia in terms of cooling Atlantic breezes and ancient, well-draining granitic ballast soils. Over the years, this dramatic landscape has evolved into a meticulous patchwork quilt of 1,150 individual vineyard plots, each micro-selected for specific grape varieties according to precise soil composition and microclimate.
In the cellar, Antonini maintains a gentle, non-interventional approach, intentionally moving away from small barriques in favour of concrete fermenters and large, untoasted oak casks to ensure the wine delivers a pure expression of place without being masked by wood. The spectacular estate is also a global leader in sustainability, designed to operate entirely via a gravity-flow system on natural terraces. Given the architectural brilliance, the world-class wines, and the on-site restaurant led by legendary chef Francis Mallmann, it is no surprise that the estate ranks among the absolute top tier of the official World’s Best Vineyards index. Explore the range today to experience the fresh, vibrant pinnacle of Atlantic-influenced South American winemaking.
