Castaño Monastrell Vineyards in Yecla

Bodegas Castaño represents the absolute pinnacle of winemaking in the sun-drenched Yecla appellation of southeastern Spain. Situated in the wider region of Murcia, the estate spans an impressive 600 hectares, but the true heart of their production lies within the prized 'Las Gruesas' and 'Pozuelo' vineyards. Sitting at a lofty elevation of 750 metres, these sites benefit from brilliant Mediterranean sunshine tempered by cooling high-altitude air. The dry-farmed vines thrive in sandy limestone soils, a brilliantly challenging environment that naturally restricts yields and forces the roots deep into the earth, resulting in highly concentrated fruit with a refreshing, balancing acidity.

The core commercial philosophy of the family is deeply tied to championing Monastrell, Spain's magnificent native red variety. While many producers previously relegated this grape to anonymous bulk production, the Castaño family has dedicated eighty percent of their vineyard space to perfecting it. Cultivated on traditional bush vines that are up to 70 years old, these remarkably low-yielding plants produce highly intense, deeply coloured Spanish red wine that boasts a complexity almost reminiscent of fine Syrah. Complementing these bold reds, the estate also skillfully manages smaller plantings of classic varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Macabeo, and Chardonnay, offering everyday drinkers a remarkably versatile and fruit-forward portfolio.

The historic legacy of the estate is defined by their pioneering vision in the 1980s. During an era when local grapes were used almost exclusively for blending, the founders boldly decided to bottle characterful, single-varietal expressions of Monastrell under their own family name. Today, under the expert guidance of Daniel Castaño, that rebellious, quality-first spirit remains completely intact. The resulting collection is globally celebrated for producing rich, warm-climate wines that consistently overdeliver on value year after year, making them an essential, highly reliable choice for matching with rich stews, roasted meats, or casual mid-week dinners.
