High altitude vineyards of Bodegas Frontonio in Aragón

Bodegas Frontonio represents a thrilling renaissance for one of the best-kept secrets in Aragón. Situated in the little-known Valdejalón area, the estate champions the revival of ancient, high-altitude vineyards. The vines are planted across diverse terrains, ranging from clay-limestone soils at 400 metres near the river Jalón to spectacular premier and grand cru sites perched up to 1,000 metres high on rocky red slate. This extreme elevation provides a cooling counterbalance to the intense Spanish sun, ensuring the grapes ripen steadily while locking in a brilliant, crisp acidity. This environment is perfectly suited to revitalising the native Garnacha grape, producing beautifully fresh and vibrant Spanish red wine that completely avoids the heavy, jammy profiles often associated with the region.

The technical precision of the estate is housed within a remarkable 200-year-old building featuring a three-storey underground cave. This historic cellar allows the winemaking team to process the fruit entirely by gravity, ensuring the delicate grape skins are handled as gently as possible. Taking advantage of the naturally cool and humid subterranean environment, the team vinifies the fruit on a strict parcel-by-parcel basis. By utilising a diverse range of ageing vessels, including raw concrete and large wooden foudres rather than small new oak barrels, they expertly preserve the pure, floral aromatics of the fruit. This meticulous approach gives everyday drinkers a highly refined and deeply textural experience that beautifully translates the distinct character of each specific vineyard plot.

The estate is the passionate collaborative project of three friends, including Master of Wine Fernando Mora, who share a deeply rebellious spirit. The winery takes its name from Saint Frontonio, the local patron saint who, according to legend, was beheaded by the Romans only for his head to be found miraculously floating upstream against the current of the River Ebro. This concept of going against the flow perfectly summarises the estate's commercial philosophy. By ignoring mainstream trends to focus on forgotten vineyards and unclassified regional designations, the founders have crafted a highly sought-after portfolio. The resulting collection offers wine lovers an incredible opportunity to enjoy highly elegant, terroir-driven expressions of Garnacha and regional white blends that truly stand apart from the crowd.
