CANTERBURY
Canterbury is a vast and diverse region stretching across the eastern coastline of the South Island. Defined by the towering Southern Alps to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east, it is a place of dramatic landscapes and wide-open plains. The region’s cool climate and long, dry autumns allow for a slow ripening process, which results in wines with incredible flavour intensity and a signature crisp acidity.
The heart of the region's quality production is found in the Waipara Valley. Sheltered by a range of coastal hills, this area produces some of New Zealand’s most exciting Pinot Noir. These reds are known for their deep colour, dark berry flavours, and a distinct earthy spice. Alongside the reds, Canterbury has built a global reputation for its Riesling, which ranges from bone-dry and citrusy to luscious and sweet, always maintaining a brilliant, refreshing backbone.
Beyond these stars, you’ll find elegant Chardonnay and punchy Sauvignon Blanc that reflect the stony soils of the Canterbury Plains. Because the region is so expansive, there is a real sense of discovery here, with boutique producers constantly finding new "sweet spots" for different varieties. If you enjoy wines that are bright, focused, and full of cool-climate character, Canterbury is a region that offers exceptional quality and plenty of personality.
