CENTRAL OTAGO

Central Otago is a wine region like no other. Located in the spectacular, mountainous heart of the South Island, it is the world’s southernmost wine-growing area. This is a landscape of dramatic snow-capped peaks, deep turquoise lakes, and ancient schist soils. It is also New Zealand’s only true "continental" wine region, meaning the vines have to endure freezing winters and hot, dry summers—a combination that produces wines with extraordinary power and purity.

The region is famous above all else for its Pinot Noir. Central Otago Pinot is unmistakable; it is much more intense and fruit-driven than its cousins in the north. Expect deep, dark cherry flavours, a velvety texture, and a unique herbal twist that locals call "wild thyme." These are bold, confident reds that have earned a seat at the table with the very best Pinot Noirs in the world.

While the reds get most of the attention, the high-altitude sunshine also works wonders for white wines. The Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay from Central Otago are incredibly vibrant, with a piercing mineral freshness that comes directly from the rocky soils. Whether you are drinking a wine from the sun-baked terraces of Bannockburn or the cooler, elevated slopes of the Gibbston Valley, Central Otago offers a dramatic and unforgettable taste of New Zealand’s alpine wilderness.
