The Côte des Blancs is the undisputed kingdom of Chardonnay, located just a few kilometres south of Épernay. Its name directly translates to the "hillside of whites," a dual nod to the sheer white colour of its exposed chalk banks and its long historical heritage as the ultimate birthplace of pristine white grapes. This dramatic, east-facing ridge is planted almost exclusively with Chardonnay, creating an intense micro-climate where the variety finds its absolute finest global expression. The only deviation occurs at the extreme southern edge in Vertus, where small pockets of Pinot Noir are cultivated to add structural weight and muscle to local blends.
The singular magic of this landscape lies directly in its pure, powdery chalk bedrock. Running through the heart of the slope are the iconic communes of Cramant, Avize, Oger, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, flanked by Chouilly and Oiry to the north.
