VALLÉE DE LA MARNE

The Vallée de la Marne is a sprawling, picturesque growing region that follows the sweeping twists of the Marne River, extending from Épernay and Tours-sur-Marne out towards Paris. Cultivated predominantly along the sun-drenched, south and south-east facing slopes of the right bank, this landscape is defined by protective, clay-rich alluvial soils. These heavier soils are less prone to spring frosts, making the valley the undisputed spiritual stronghold for the Pinot Meunier grape. Traditionally prized by blenders for bringing immediate fruitiness, plush textures, and a soft, approachable balance to non-vintage cuvées, Meunier is now heavily championed by artisan growers as a highly expressive, characterful single-varietal star in its own right.

At the very heart of this grand river landscape sits Aÿ, an elite Grand Cru village that completely defies the valley's Meunier dominance. Renowned globally for producing spectacular, intensely muscular Pinot Noir—known locally by the ancient moniker Pinot Vert Doré—Aÿ is home to some of the most famous houses in the region, including Bollinger and Gosset. The unique, chalky-clay slopes here yield remarkable wines that possess a powerful structural weight, deep gastronomic complexity, and an exceptional finesse that forms the backbone of the region's most prestigious bottles.

Further along the riverbanks, the historic village of Hautvillers links the valley directly to the roots of sparkling history. It was within the cellars of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Pierre d’Hautvillers that the legendary monk Dom Pérignon refined viticultural techniques that fundamentally shaped the modern era of wine production. Radiating outward from Épernay towards Pierry and Mancy, a semicircular sweep of steeply sloping vineyards showcases the sheer versatility of the region. Whether crafted from old, deep-rooted Meunier vines or the regal Pinot Noir of the river bluffs, these bottles reflect a distinct, sun-ripened freshness and physical substance that is utterly unique to the Marne.
