Founded in 1951 by the legendary Familia Martínez Bujanda, a family deeply rooted in Rioja winemaking since 1889, Cosecheros y Criadores is a historic estate built to bring elite, estate-bottled discipline to a wider audience. Vertical integration and complete control are central to their philosophy; they own the vineyards and handle every stage of production from vine to bottle. While their winemaking facility is located in the north, they source their fruit from the vast, sun-drenched plains of La Mancha, situated on the high-altitude Meseta Central plateau. Here, the intense daytime sun produces exceptionally rich, flavourful grapes, which are then brought under the careful watch of their cellars to apply strict, Rioja-level ageing expertise using an impressive inventory of 6,000 oak barrels.
For the everyday drinker, this unique combination of intense plateau sunshine and northern barrel discipline provides a massive benefit in the glass. Because the winery operates outside the rigid, restrictive local DO laws, they have the total freedom to innovate and blend with absolute flexibility. This allows them to focus entirely on crafting incredibly reliable, characterful everyday labels like Candidato that deliver a smooth, beautifully rounded texture packed with ripe fruit and subtle oak spice. They offer a vibrant, straightforward drinking experience that stands out effortlessly, making them an excellent match for a mid-week roast chicken, hearty pasta dishes, or a casual Friday night pizza.
The winery also holds a unique place in modern Spanish wine history, as it was specifically designed from the ground up to focus on the global stage. Back in the 1950s, when most central Spanish wine was sold cheaply in bulk, the Martínez Bujanda family recognized that the high plains held incredible, untapped potential for premium winemaking. By building a dedicated, state-of-the-art facility focused entirely on estate-bottling and barrel ageing for international wine lovers, they became true pioneers, proving to the world that this rugged heartland could produce sophisticated, world-class everyday wines.
