Domaine Carneros | Napa County

The chateau style building of Domaine Carneros in Napa County

Situated in the cool, fog-blanketed hills of the Carneros AVA, which straddles both Napa and Sonoma, Domaine Carneros represents an exceptional meeting of Californian terroir and French winemaking heritage. The estate benefits from the chilling breezes rolling in from San Pablo Bay, creating an incredibly long, slow growing season. This perfectly regulated climate allows the classic sparkling grape varieties to develop deep, complex flavours while retaining the crucial, mouth-watering acidity required for world-class fizz.

The foundation of the estate is deeply rooted in Champagne royalty. In the late 1980s, Claude Taittinger sought a location in California that could produce sparkling wine to rival the finest bottles of his native France. Recognising the immense potential of the Carneros region, he established the winery, anchoring it with a breathtaking 18th-century château inspired by his family’s historic residence in Champagne. Today, the estate stands as a striking visual and viticultural tribute to those grand European traditions.

The winemaking team remains fiercely dedicated to the traditional method, treating every bottle with the same exacting standards found in top-tier Champagne houses. By focusing almost exclusively on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they craft wines that spend an extensive amount of time ageing in the cellar before release. This patient approach builds incredibly fine, persistent bubbles and a luxurious, creamy texture, resulting in brilliant Californian sparkling wines that deliver immense sophistication and energy in the glass.
