Set in the breathtaking foothills of the Pyrenees in South West France, Domaine Cauhapé is renowned for producing some of the most vibrant and expressive white wines in the Jurançon region. Under the guidance of master winemaker Henri Ramonteu, the estate is deeply rooted in steep, high-altitude vineyards. These slopes benefit from warm autumn breezes and cool mountain nights, creating the perfect natural climate for native grape varieties to thrive and develop incredibly intense, uplifting flavours.
The estate completely champions ancient Pyrenean grapes over familiar international names. Gros Manseng forms the backbone of their brilliant, bone-dry whites, delivering punchy citrus and crisp green apple notes alongside a mouth-watering freshness. For their famous sweet wines, they rely on Petit Manseng, leaving the grapes to naturally shrivel on the vine late into the autumn. This late-harvest approach concentrates the natural sugars while retaining a searing, electric acidity. The result is a selection of luscious, honeyed and tropical wines that remain completely refreshing and never feel heavy on the palate. Small additions of rare local grapes like Camaralet and Courbu are often blended in to add subtle, fascinating hints of white pepper and exotic spice.
Before Henri took the helm in the 1980s, the Jurançon area was almost entirely dedicated to producing sweet wine. He became a true pioneer by proving that this unique mountain landscape could also produce world-class dry whites that rival the most famous names in Burgundy. Today, the estate continues to blend a deep respect for local tradition with highly sustainable farming, ensuring the wild biodiversity of the Pyrenean foothills translates directly into the lively, characterful energy found in every bottle.
