Josef Chromy | Tasmania

Josef Chromy Vineyards and Property

Josef Chromy Wines represents a remarkable story of resilience and dedication to the Tasmanian wine landscape. Having fled war-torn Czechoslovakia as a nineteen-year-old, Josef Chromy arrived in Australia with nothing but hope and ambition. Over several decades, he became a founding father of the modern regional wine scene, building several high-profile brands. In 2007, he poured all of his expertise into launching his own eponymous estate, creating a true testament to the land he adopted as his home.

The original estate sits in the cool, rolling hills of Relbia within the Tamar Valley, spanning sixty-one hectares of pristine vineyard. This southerly climate provides the long, gentle ripening period needed to produce incredibly elegant wines with a wonderful natural freshness. To capture different expressions of the island, the team has recently expanded their footprint, acquiring an additional seventeen hectares in the slightly warmer Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania, further cementing their reputation for premium cool-climate winemaking.

In the cellar, highly talented winemaker Yael Sandler ensures every grape is treated with the utmost care. Bringing global experience and a masterful touch, she crafts brilliant cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and razor-sharp Riesling. The estate is also deeply committed to protecting its beautiful environment, operating with advanced solar power, comprehensive composting, and full Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certification. The result is a vibrant, meticulously crafted portfolio of Australian premium wines that are an absolute joy to pour for any occasion.
