LA RIOJA

The mountainous terrain of La Rioja in Argentina

Tucked into the sun-drenched foothills of the Andes Mountains just north of Mendoza, the spectacular La Rioja Argentina wine region is a place of immense historical pride and extreme mountain viticulture. The landscape is defined by small, emerald-green river valleys irrigated by glacial meltwater, securely sheltered between the towering Sierras de Velasco to the east and the dramatic Sierra de Famatina to the west. This unique geography provides an exceptional barrier against harsh weather, offering brilliant alpine sunshine almost every day of the year. The combination of intense daylight, clean mountain air, and mineral-rich soils creates a highly distinctive terroir that produces beautifully expressive, structurally refined bottles.

The high-altitude setting is particularly celebrated for producing some of South America's most vibrant and perfume-driven white styles. The undisputed star of the province is Torrontés Riojano, an indigenous white grape variety that accounts for over a third of the region's vineyard plantings. In these sheltered valleys, the grape achieves a stunning aromatic intensity, yielding crisp, bone-dry white wines bursting with notes of white peach, jasmine, and citrus peel. For red wine drinkers, the region’s warm, bright days and cool mountain nights provide a fantastic canvas for robust, deeply coloured varieties, with smooth, fruit-forward Bonarda and Syrah emerging as the standout red performers.

Steeped in historical intrigue, this outpost holds a legendary status as one of the very first places where European vines were planted in Argentine soil. Spanish settlers established vineyards here in the late sixteenth century, led by Juan Ramírez de Velasco, who named the province after his own native homeland in northern Spain. This identical naming sparked a fascinating, centuries-long legal rivalry over global branding rights. The dispute finally culminated in a historic 2011 federal court victory, which officially protected the province's right to proudly display the La Rioja Argentina name on its wine labels, forever distinguishing its aromatic white wines from the oak-aged reds of Europe.
