RHEINHESSEN

Long straight road through the centre of the vineyards in Rheinhessen

Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine region, nestled within a beautiful valley of gently rolling hills on the left bank of the Rhine River. Wine has been grown in this historic landscape since Roman times, and the region boasts the oldest documented vineyard location in the entire country, the legendary Niersteiner Glöck. For decades, these vast, verdant farmlands were shared with a multitude of other agricultural crops. This unique topography creates a wonderfully protected microclimate, shielded from harsh weather by surrounding mountain ranges, allowing a diverse range of vines to thrive in the region's remarkably fertile soils.

While some everyday drinkers may remember the region as the birthplace of the soft, mass-produced blended whites of the late twentieth century, the modern reality could not be more different. Today, a dynamic, young generation of local winegrowers is spearheading a spectacular quality revolution. Embracing the ideal growing conditions found across the gentle river slopes, these forward-thinking producers have completely revitalised the region's reputation, stepping far away from the past to focus on low yields, craftsmanship, and pure regional expression.

The undisputed superstar of this modern movement is dry Riesling, which achieves a magnificent mineral intensity and crisp, vibrant energy on the famous sun-baked slopes along the Rhine. Alongside these world-class whites, the region produces outstanding, elegant Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and beautifully textured, food-friendly Silvaner. Crafted by independent family estates with a passion for innovation, these high-quality, uncomplicated wines deliver an exciting combination of deep historical roots and a fresh, contemporary approach to drinking.
