Ribeira Sacra

Tucked deep within the rugged interior of Galicia, Ribeira Sacra is arguably the most breathtaking wine region in Spain. The name translates to the "Sacred Banks," inspired by the ancient monasteries that dot the dramatic, steep gorges carved by the River Sil. Farming here is incredibly challenging, with vines clinging to dizzying, stone-terraced cliffs. Everything must be done by hand, but this extreme landscape is exactly what makes the Galician wines from this area so special.

While the rest of the coast is famous for whites, Ribeira Sacra is all about the red Mencía grape. The vines plunge their roots deep into pure slate soils, producing vibrant, energetic Spanish red wine. Instead of heavy oak flavours, you will find incredibly pure notes of crushed wild cherries, fresh raspberries, and a distinct stony freshness that feels alive in the glass. It is a brilliant, medium-bodied style that appeals to lovers of fresh, elegant reds.

Because these wines are so beautifully balanced and vibrant, they are a joy to pair with food. A bright, slate-driven Mencía is the ultimate companion for a slow-roasted shoulder of pork, a rustic chorizo stew, or simply a selection of cured meats and hard cheeses.
