Spain | Rueda

The Rueda DO wine region is located in the North West of Spain high on the Castilla y León plateau. Here the continental climate and high altitude vineyards makes it ideal location for the production of refreshing white wines, with zingy high acidity.

Winemaking in Rueda has been documented as early as the 10th century and it was the first D.O. (Designation of Origin) to be approved in Castilla y León, in 1980. Spain's most popular white grape variety, Verdejo, is the prominent grape variety of the region and thrives in the harsh conditions of the local terroir. As well as single varietal expressions it is also blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Viura grapes.

Most wine from the Rueda region is made in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, where it is stored before ever hitting the bottle. However, versatile Verdejo responds well to oak fermentation and ageing, which adds extra dimensions to the wine. The innovative spirit in D.O. Rueda has led winemakers to experiment with natural yeasts, cement egg-shaped fermenters and even using the Verdejo grapes in the creation of sweet and sparkling wines.

The still white wines produced in Rueda are delightfully refreshing with acidity and crispness that appeal to the Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc fan looking for a new and interesting alternative.
