SALTA

The Salta Wine Province of Northern Argentina

Perched in the rugged northern reaches of Argentina, the spectacular Salta wine region is home to some of the most extreme, sky-high vineyards on the planet. The crown jewel of the province is the beautiful Cafayate region, nestled deep within the majestic Calchaquí Valleys. Here, vines thrive at astonishing altitudes starting at 4,900 feet and ascending to heights well above 6,500 feet, with pioneering parcels reaching over 10,000 feet above sea level. This thin mountain air creates an extraordinary microclimate defined by brilliant, unobstructed sunshine nearly 365 days a year and a dramatic temperature drop when the sun slips behind the Andes, locking in crisp freshness and building thick skins on the grapes.

The high-altitude terrain relies on an intriguing combination of deep mountain soils and pure glacial meltwater. The vines are anchored in rugged sandy-loam soils layered with gravel and fine surface sands, which force the roots to dig deep for moisture. This natural stress translates into remarkably concentrated fruit. While the intense solar radiation produces deeply coloured, muscular red wines like Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinct mineral edge, the true calling card of this unique terroir is Torrontés Riojano, an incredibly expressive white grape that finds its absolute finest global expression in these elevated valleys.

What makes these mountain bottlings so captivating to drink is the striking contrast between their intensely aromatic profile and their crisp, refreshing structure. The signature Torrontés wine bursts out of the glass with wild floral aromas, fresh peach, and citrus peel, yet tastes bone-dry, vibrant, and remarkably clean on the palate due to the naturally high acidity preserved by the cool mountain nights. It is a lively, refreshing style that offers a brilliant alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. Combined with the concentrated, structurally refined red wines of the valley, this elevated outpost stands as one of the most exciting and distinctive terroirs in South America.
