For more than three centuries, the San Leonardo estate has served as the cherished home of the Marquis Guerrieri Gonzaga family. Located in the picturesque Vallagarina Valley, the estate operates as a flourishing garden of vines and roses. The vineyards benefit from a truly exceptional microclimate, protected from harsh northern winds by the towering barrier of the Alps, while the valley floor absorbs and radiates the gentle warmth of nearby Lake Garda. Across fifty acres, the family meticulously cultivates their vines with a strict focus on low yields, ensuring the grapes develop remarkable depth and concentration before they are harvested.
While the setting is deeply traditional, the winemaking approach has evolved significantly to craft elegant reds that easily rival the finest Bordeaux blends. In the vineyards, older farming systems were replaced with more precise training methods to better manage the vine canopy, allowing varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot to thrive. Today, the entire estate is dedicated to preserving its precious alpine ecosystem. Since converting to full organic agriculture in 2015, the family has introduced vibrant bee colonies to support local biodiversity and transitioned to solar power for a significant portion of the winery's energy needs.
The modern era of these exceptional wines truly began in the late 1960s when the estate’s farming practices were revitalised, paving the way for the inaugural San Leonardo vintage in 1982. This milestone marked a dramatic shift in how the wines were made. Instead of simply blending different grapes together straight from the vineyard, the winemakers began aging distinct parcels of wine in oak barrels, meticulously tasting and assembling the final blend in the quiet of the cellar. This careful, measured approach has secured their place among Italy's most respected producers, resulting in wines of aristocratic finesse that showcase a beautiful balance between crisp alpine freshness and rich, dark fruit.
