Santiago Ruiz | Rias Baixas

Open doorway in wall through to the Santiago Ruiz winery and gardens

Widely celebrated as the undisputed 'father of Albariño', Santiago Ruiz is a true legend of the Spanish white wine world. Before his pioneering work in the 1980s, the brilliant wines of the Atlantic coast were largely a well-kept local secret. He dedicated his life to championing the native grapes of the region, almost single-handedly helping to establish the prestigious Rías Baixas appellation we know and love today.

Situated in the idyllic O Rosal sub-region, right where the river Miño meets the ocean, the estate benefits from a fantastic coastal microclimate. Rather than focusing entirely on a single grape, the true magic of this winery lies in the traditional O Rosal blend. By masterfully combining bright, zesty Albariño with other expressive native varieties like Loureiro, Treixadura, and Godello, the winemaking team creates a beautifully complex and deeply aromatic glass of wine.

You can easily spot a bottle of Santiago Ruiz by its iconic label, which features a charming, hand-drawn map originally sketched to help guests find the estate for a family wedding. Inside the bottle, the wine is just as inviting. Expect a wonderfully crisp, energetic, and beautifully textured pour that practically demands to be served perfectly chilled alongside fresh shellfish or simple, pan-fried fish.
