Situated in the Highlands near the shores of the Cromarty Firth, Teaninich is an absolute giant of the Scottish whisky world - yet you have likely never seen its name in lights. Since 1817, it has been a tireless workhorse, producing millions of litres of spirit every year to provide the vibrant backbone for some of the world's most famous blended whiskies, including Johnnie Walker.
What makes Teaninich so brilliant is its uniquely fresh character. The distillery uses a highly unusual piece of equipment called a mash filter press instead of a traditional mash tun. You can think of it as a giant, highly efficient espresso machine for malted barley. This rare approach creates a crystal-clear liquid before distillation even begins, resulting in a spirit that is famously bright, green, and grassy. Expect lively notes of crisp green apple, freshly cut meadow grass, chamomile, and a wonderfully rich, mouth-coating texture.
Because almost every drop is destined for the blending vats, finding Teaninich bottled as a standalone single malt is a rare and exciting treat. When you do find one, it offers a fantastic, unpeated Highland dram that feels quite literally like a crisp spring morning in a glass.
