THE MÂCONNAIS
Situated halfway between Lyon and Beaune, the Mâconnais is the vibrant, sun-drenched gateway to southern Burgundy. This is a region that celebrates Chardonnay in its purest and most generous form. Because the climate here is warmer than the northern slopes, the grapes reach a beautiful level of ripeness, resulting in wines that are round, juicy, and full of golden fruit flavours like peach and apricot.
While the region is famous for its incredible value, it also houses some truly world-class sites. The most famous is Pouilly-Fuissé (not to be confused with the Sauvignon Blanc of the Loire!). Here, the vineyards sit on dramatic, amphitheatre-like slopes that act as natural "sun traps." This extra warmth creates some of the richest white wines in Burgundy—bold, concentrated, and often aged in oak barrels to add a sophisticated hint of toasted nut and spice.
