VERDELHO

Verdelho is a classic white wine grape variety grown throughout Portugal (particularly the Douro Valley), though it is more commonly associated with the island of Madeira, where its name is given to one of the four main types of Madeira wine. At the turn of the 20th century it was the most widely planted white grape in Madeira but has since lost ground to the more reliable variety Tinta Negra Mole.

Whilst it is still grown in Europe, it is proving a popular variety in Australia, particularly the McLaren Vale, where it produces vibrant, lemony, full-bodied table wines.

Verdelho should not be confused with the Verdejo white grape grown in Spain (Rueda DO in particular) or Italy's Verdello grape.
