Greece is currently home to one of the most exciting wine revolutions in Europe. While it is one of the world’s oldest winemaking nations—with archeological evidence dating back over 6,500 years—today’s Greek wine scene is defined by a bold, modern energy. By moving away from high-volume production and refocusing on its treasure trove of over 200 indigenous grape varieties, Greece is producing world-class wines that offer unique flavours, incredible freshness, and a true sense of place.

The star of the Aegean is undoubtedly Assyrtiko. Originating on the volcanic island of Santorini, this white grape produces wines with "electric" acidity and a distinct saline, mineral core that tastes of the sea and sun-baked stones. It is a bone-dry, powerful white that has earned its place on the world’s finest wine lists. In the mountainous Peloponnese, you will find the aromatic Moschofilero, a grape that delivers exotic scents of rose petal and citrus, offering a light and refreshing counterpoint to the volcanic intensity of the islands.

For red wine enthusiasts, Greece offers two heavyweights. Xinomavro, primarily from the northern regions of Naoussa and Amyndeo, is often called the "Barolo of Greece" for its complex structure, firm tannins, and haunting aromas of sun-dried tomato, olive, and red fruit. In contrast, the Agiorgitiko grape from Nemea produces "The King of Reds"—plush, velvety wines with juicy red berry flavours and soft spice that are immediately accessible and incredibly food-friendly.
