Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2022
The Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia is a brilliantly refined red wine crafted entirely from the Nebbiolo grape in the heart of Piedmont, Italy. Named after the prolific truffle woods that surround her family estate in La Morra, rising star winemaker Giulia Negri blends fruit from two remarkable sites to make this bottle. She combines grapes from Serradenari, the highest vineyard in the entire Barolo region where cool mountain breezes deliver incredible freshness, with fruit from the famous Brunate vineyard, which adds generous warmth and depth. Taking inspiration from her time in Burgundy, she focuses on pure elegance rather than heavy extraction. Pouring a glass reveals a bright ruby colour and a wonderfully inviting profile. Expect a vibrant mouthful of juicy red cherries, wild strawberries, and crushed raspberries, layered with fragrant rose petals, a touch of liquorice, and gentle woodland spice. Because the wine is aged for two years in large Austrian oak barrels rather than small, heavy casks, the structure feels remarkably silky and polished. While traditional Barolo can sometimes feel tough and drying in its youth, this high-altitude style is much softer, rounder, and ready to enjoy straight away. This is a standout Italian red to open for a special weekend dinner. Its bright natural freshness and fine structure pair brilliantly with a slow-cooked beef stew, a classic Sunday roast beef, or a creamy wild mushroom risotto.
