Portugal is an incredible treasure trove for wine lovers, fiercely proud of its vast array of over 250 native grapes that you simply will not find anywhere else. Because the country has largely stuck to its own traditions rather than following international trends, it offers highly authentic, flavour-packed wines that span a remarkable range of styles and provide fantastic value for money.

Up in the lush, breezy north, the undeniable star is Vinho Verde. Famous for producing crisp, light, and intensely refreshing white wines - often with a signature, gentle spritz - it is the ultimate choice for a sunny afternoon in the courtyard. Grapes like Alvarinho shine here, bringing bright citrus flavours that are a brilliant, effortless match for fresh seafood.

When it comes to red wine, the spectacular, terraced slopes of the Douro Valley lead the charge. While this striking landscape is the historic home of rich, warming, and world-renowned Port, the very same grapes (such as Touriga Nacional) are now used to craft outstanding, full-bodied, and deeply satisfying unfortified red wines.

Moving south, the granitic hills of the Dão region are surrounded by pine forests and produce some of Portugal's most elegant and smooth red wines, often celebrated for their freshness and longevity. Nearby, the coastal region of Bairrada champions the native Baga grape, creating bold, structured reds that are incredibly food-friendly and full of character.

Further south still, the sun-baked plains of the Alentejo produce rich, fruit-forward reds that are smooth, easy-drinking, and the perfect companions for a hearty roast or a relaxed barbecue. From easy-going whites to cellar-worthy reds, Portugal is a dynamic nation packed with character and regional pride.
